Ancient Water Mill Now a Holiday Cottage in France

When the water mill was built, the Limousin part of France was controlled by the English military. The mill was built in about 1276 and the local commander of the garrison lived in a house alongside a bridge over the river Beraude. As he was a member of the British gentry the area became known as 'Le Pont de Chez Lord' meaning literally The Bridge of the House of the Lord.

'Le Moulin de Chez Lord' (which means The Mill of the House of the Lord) was built close by the house. It was needed to mill the flour to bake bread to feed the military and also to grind the oats for the horses. Do not forget that this was long before the arrival in Europe of the potato and bread was the main source of carbohydrate. The mill was still in use until the 1980s when it prepared animal feed. The mill is now a holiday cottage in the central part of France known as the Limousin.

Now traveling towards the East there is the Massive Central which is a mountainous area now famous for skiing in the winter. Turning now towards the west a short trip takes you to Limoges, very famous for its porcelain manufacture and going further still the coastal city of La Rochelle the largest fishing center in the Bay of Biscay. This very interesting city is now also a holiday resort and a major center for sea food.

The region known as the Limousin is a relatively new one on the tourist map it was until recently a typically French holiday area however the secret is now out. It is a region of forests, grasslands, hills and valleys with charming hamlets nestled in the valleys. The region contains countless numbers of lakes in the many valleys which make for exceptional vistas. Most rural activities are readily available. Especially prominent amongst these are the wonderful walks of every degree of difficulty thus suiting all abilities and levels of enthusiasm.

The ancient mill is 700 years old, and was constructed to supply flour for English military who were stationed here to look after the British wine interests around Bordeaux. The watermill is nestled in the valley and includes 20 acres of pasture and woodland. The mill is at the end of a long drive which ensures tranquility.

The river Beraude and the mill stream almost surround the mill and just a few meters from the front door is a waterfall which was the overspill for the mill pool. The river runs through the garden and encloses a tiny island with several pine trees that is wonderful for relaxing on those very hot days as it always has a wind coming off the river. We also often have parties and barbecues there on summer days.

The granary of the mill has now been made into two double bedrooms en suite and the downstairs into a living area with kitchen, lounge etc. There is a shaded patio area by the waterfall which is perfect for al fresco dining or for having a glass of wine on the long summer evenings.

Since we are lucky enough live in the center of a very historic region and in the most beautiful countryside, in future we will further explore the region and describe the abundant attractions.

The great wolf lodge is located further downstream from the falls by the whirlpool. So, if you are looking to see the falls themselves or experience the excitement by the falls you'll have to pack-up the kids in the van and leave. Also, not having additional shops and entertainment within walking distance will also leave you with parking charges that can be up to $2 per half hour by the falls and lots of walking.

3. Americana Resort:

My 3rd pick is the Americana Resort which is a simpler water park resort and more accustomed to the budget minded traveler. The final decisions rest with the parents, but if you invite your teenagers to be part of planning they will feel they have a voice and their opinions are important. Pyla Village Resort - Cyprues

Pyla Village Resort was completed in February/March 2007. Unlike other complexes which have been built since, Pyla Village Resort is one of the most spacious. There are eight separate blocks with 20 apartments in each block. That makes a total of 160 apartments. The resort is in a rural location, but how long that remains the case will depend on how quickly the area is developed.
Pyla 1 was the original name given to the site, because this was the first development by G. N. Hassapis in Pyla. Hassapis is one of the most respected developers is this part of Cyprus and anyone wanting to buy a property in Cyprus can be assured that if they buy a property in a Hassapis development, they are dealing with bone fide company and the quality of building is assured.
Since building Pyla 1, Pyla Palms has been built close by and a third site is under construction next to this resort by the name of Pyla Gardens (phase I) and one more complex is planned in the adjacent plot/field which is probably Pyla Gardens (phase II). All around the outskirts of the old village of Pyla, there are building plots reserved for new developments on which villas and apartments have been built or are being constructed. Larnaca and the surrounding area is a prime hotspot in Cyprus for property purchase as there are many plans to develop the area to attract tourism and investment. There are now plans for a Theme Park to built by the Russians and I understand that these plans have been passed but when construction will start; who knows?
The authorities have long talked of a golf course in the area. There are plans to develop a golf course at Tereseffanou and although apartments have been built in the area there is no sign of a golf course. It is most likely going to be completed by the end of 2010.
Pyla Village Resort has been built to modern standards, though the sewerage system that the resort connects to is still behind the UK standards. Even now, it is not advisable to flush loads of toilet paper down the toilet for fear of creating a blockage. That is probably the only weakness and the apartments have been finished to a high standard and the apartments available for holiday rent have been furnished to a high standard according to the owners taste. The water supply in Pyla is very good and remains on for most of the time, whereas other regions in Cyprus suffer with prolonged interruptions in the water supply.
How true it is I do not know, but I was told that the authorities have to keep water in the pipes, or else, if they become empty there is a danger that they collapse causing serious problems.
Pyla Village Resort has been built with the disabled in mind and wheelchairs can easily move around the site and all the apartments have lifts. The toilet by the pool is also designed for wheelchair access. Two years have passed and the resort still looks good, the grounds are managed and generally are kept neat and tidy and watered by an irrigation system. Unfortunately, some of the original tall palm trees have died and need replacing.
The Buffer Zone: Pyla Village Resort has been built in the 'Buffer Zone'. This is a zone patrolled by the United Nations peace-keeping force. Being in the 'Buffer Zone' does not affect peoples' comings and goings when using the resort. You can see to the north on the raised plateau, the Turkish flag and army lookout overlooking the area of Pyla. To the east on the hill you can see the UN flag and lookout. This is also home to one of the British military bases in Cyprus.
The other British military base is Akrotiri south of Limassol. The only problem of being in the Buffer Zone is that you are not allowed to take photographs. One UN official told me that the villagers do not like having photographs taken. As Pyla Village Resort is in the Buffer Zone, this means that strictly speaking residents should not take photographs of the resort. I do mot think that anyone is likely to be challenged, though some of the UN personel reside in Pyla Village Resort. It is not all that apparent, especially if you drive to Pyla Village Resort from the Dekehlia road, but there are a few signs around (some of which are in poor condition) prohibiting the taking of photographs.
Tensions still exist between the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots who co-reside in Pyla Village and tolerate one another. The division is still apparent as you notice that some buildings have Turkish writing on them. The division is very apparent when you see that there are two schools in Pyla; one for the Turkish Cypriot children and one for the Greek Cypriot children. They are distinguishable by the fact that they have their national flag flying above the school.
Pyla Village Resort might not be set in the prettiest part of Cyprus; for that you need to go to the west side of the island around Paphos and North West including the Troodos Mountains. For obvious reasons, the North side of the island is not so accessible, though if you go to Nicosia the border has been opened up and you can walk through to the north side of the city. The north side of the island is still under Turkish occupation though visitors can cross over but you are not allowed to take your hire car there.
The Paphos region has been highly developed and property prices are that much higher in that part of the island. Pyla is situated about 15 kilometres east of Larnaca with easy access to the motorway network that will take you to other areas of Cyprus quickly. Ayia Napa on the east side of the island is only 20 minutes away by car and is easily accessible if you want to go there to be part of nightlife. Nicosia is 40 minutes away by car and Limassol one hour. Paphos is approximately 2 hours by car.
Larnaca Airport: Pyla Village is only 15 to 20 minutes from Larnaca airport when you take motorway route. The airport has been expanded and a new terminal building has been opened which has more than double the capacity of the old terminal. This is a sign of the planned improvements taking place in the Larnaca area which will eventually have golf courses and expanded marina and the ugly oil terminals re-sited. When all this will happen, who knows, but there are plans at least.
Driving in Cyprus : Cyprus is a popular destination for the British. It is good for the British and those from other countries that drive on the left; for in Cyprus the traffic drives on the left. Road signs are the same as you see throughout Europe, but what makes driving somewhat difficult is that the signs are in Greek. Not being able to read Greek, I find navigating a lot more difficult. Drivers from the UK will find driving in Cyprus relatively straightforward.You do have to watch out for Cypriot drivers as the accident rate is quite high.
As the annual mileage for a car is relatively low in Cyprus, cars only have to have an MOT inspection every two years; another reason that makes Cyprus a relatively low-priced country to live, especially when compared to the UK.
Signs of recovery: The whole world has suffered to some extent from the economic down-turn. Signs are now showing that a recovery is on its way. This means that Cyprus should see an increase in tourism again. It has been particularly hard for the British in that the UK pound has dropped in value against the Euro and has made Cyprus much more expensive for the British holiday-maker. Now, the pound is showing signs of recovery against the Euro and this should encourage the British holiday-maker to come to Cyprus again. Even if the British have been hit hard, this does not stop visitors from the rest of the world visiting Cyprus and choosing to stay in Pyla Village Resort.
In times of recession, it is known for crime rates to increase. One thing about Cyprus is that the crime rate is low. That does not mean you should not worry about having your possessions stolen, you still have to take precautions and not leave valuables on view and so be a temptation for thieves. The fact that Cyprus has a low crime rate means that there is less chance you will have anything stolen.

Now, there are a lot of people who think that if you don't go that route you can't have any fun. I actually used to have that mindset as well, but it's just not true.

We were scouring the area for cheap vacation spots and we ended up actually in South Carolina although I am not exactly sure what beach we ended up going to. I recall it was not very crowded and I took a walk on the beach several times a day and hardly would see any people. It was so fun, it's definitely one of my best vacation memories.

But you know what? I didn't actually think it would be fun. Boy was I wrong. We went swimming every day, had big family cookouts and grill parties, and sure, we went out to eat occasionally too but we did a lot of cooking at the beach house and saved a ton of money. Because again, if everyone is going in together to buy groceries, it's super cheap for each person.

You can set up volleyball nets on the beach, roast marshmallows at a bonfire (if allowed), hunt for seashells (I found a bunch of sand dollars), and learn to surf. I was terrible at that but it was fun to try. Just body surf if you don't have access to a board.

Bring board games and get the whole family involved, maybe even play Crazy 8 or poker for nickels and dimes. I know, I know, you are saying oh man, I need to have my computer, my email, my video games, etc. But you will be absolutely surprised at how much fun and affordable a family beach vacation can be. As cheap vacation spots go, it is one of my favorites. Besides, you'll probably have access to your computer and email anyway as just about everywhere these days has wireless connection.

However, I would seriously recommend you just put it away for most of the vacation and enjoy spending time with your family. Give it a try, you'll have a blast and you won't spend a ton of money. And with some of the money you save, splurge on a fancy meal in a restaurant once or twice.

It is also becoming a popular idea, as well as currently being proposed, that the US passport will replace the standard drivers license as a primary form of official citizen identification.

This has already taken place in many countries in Europe, as they require a passport for even domestic flights and hotels - tourist or not. Because of this, more than likely, many others will follow suit, including the US in the near future.

Where are you going? If you are thinking of going abroad, why? Consider visiting places of interest closer to home, which can be reached by train, or bike, instead of by aeroplane, car, or boat. Many worldly people have never seen the beauty of their own country, opting instead for holidays in other parts of the world. This is not just a pity in terms of what they are missing out on, but on how much harsher on the environment, air travel is.

How are you getting there? If travelling by car, can you carpool? Otherwise known as car-sharing, lift-sharing, or ridesharing, ads for drivers and passengers can be found in local papers and online fairly easily. You could even team up with family, friends or neighbours and make a party of it. Travel Health - Traveler's Diarrhea

Montezuma's revenge - Aztec Two Step - whatever nicknames it may be called, if you've experienced it, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Traveler's diarrhea (TD) is the most common medical issue that people complain of while traveling in less developed countries.

High-risk destinations (attack rates of up to 60% during the first 2 weeks) include Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Haiti, and the developing countries of Africa, South and Central America, the Middle East, and Asia. Lesser risks countries include Australia, countries in Europe, Japan, South Africa and countries in North America.

Traveler's diarrhea is not a specific disease, but describes the symptoms caused by certain microorganisms that are transmitted via contaminated food and water. Bacteria are by far the most common cause of TD with about 85% of cases being bacterial. Parasites and viruses are causes of TD 10% and 5 % respectively.

Bacterial causes of TD include; Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter, various stains of E. coli and Vibrio (the cause of cholera).

Parasitic causes include Giardia and Entamoeba histolytica (amoebiasis). Viruses like rotavirus and norovirus have been implicated.

TD is commonly seen with the following symptoms; an abrupt onset of loose, watery or semi-formed stools associated with abdominal cramps and rectal urgency. Other symptoms like nausea, bloating, and fever, may also be present. Vomiting may occur in up to 15% of those affected. Travelers' diarrhea is generally self-limited and lasts 3-4 days even without treatment.

How can you prevent TD on your next trip overseas? Here are some common sense tips:

• Don't buy food from street vendors.
• Avoid raw foods. In particular, salads, uncooked vegetables, and unpasteurized milk and milk products such as cheese, and to eat only food that has been cooked and is still hot or fruit that can be peeled by the traveler personally (bananas and oranges).
• Also avoid undercooked or raw meats, fish or shellfish.
• Do not use tap water to wash fruits and vegetables or to make ice cubes. Avoid fruit juices made reconstituted with tap water.
• When in areas where water is not chlorinated; bottled water is a safe alternative as long as the bottle is unopened and sealed.
• Use bottled water to brush your teeth.
• Keep your mouth closed while showering.
• Make sure eating utensils and dishes are clean and dry before you use them.
• Boiling water is the best way to make water safe to drink. High boil for at least one minute.
• The use of iodine or chlorine tablets is effective against most pathogens. They however are ineffective against some parasites like Cryptosporidium.
• The use of water filters is effective against most pathogens.
• The use of prophylactic antibiotics may be useful particularly short term travelers. Quinolones and Rifaximin are commonly prescribed antibiotics for this reason.
• Pepto-Bismol may reduce your chances of getting TD.
• In Europe and Canada there is an approved vaccine for cholera that can be administered prior to travel.
• Hand washing and hand sanitizer gels reduce the incidence of diarrhea (as well as respiratory illness).

Most cases of TD do not require treatment and will resolve spontaneously. However in cases where there is bloody diarrhea and or high fever, antibiotic treatment should be given. If you do get TD, drink plenty of fluids. Certain infections like cholera can be life-threatening due to fluid loss. IV fluid replacement may be required in some cases.

How to Plan Your Family Camping Trips

Family camping trips are some of the greatest times ever for a family to experience. As a young boy growing up in Minnesota, some of my best memories were the simple camping trips sleeping in a canvass tent at primitive state parks. As our family progressed to more modern methods such as a camping trailer and RV, it became more of a chore. We carried more junk. The set up seemed to take forever. We spent more time looking for things that were packed so far out of reach.

I try to make our family camping trips as simple as possible. We pack everything into our small Subaru station wagon. I have a Thule cargo carrier for the roof. Everything is totally organized.

I start my planning by developing a simple list of must have items:

Tent
Sleeping bags
Air mattresses
Camp stove
Camp lantern
Basic cook kit
Pressure cooker
Hot mitts/pot holders
Wok
Basic eating utensils
Plates, bowls, cups
Toilet paper
Lighter
5 gallon water jug
Flashlights
Wash basin
Hatchet/hammer
Rope
Manual coffee grinder
Coffee drip cones and or French presses
Large insulated cooler

The more stuff that you take, the more of a hassle the trip becomes. Keep it simple.

Storage

Every item that we carry is stored in rectangular Sterilite plastic storage boxes. We pack 4 of them into the back of our station wagon. It makes it so easy to set up camp. We just pull the storage boxes out and grab what we need when we need them. At night, we place them securely in the back of our station wagon. All of our sleeping gear goes in the cargo box on the roof.

Cooking Kit

Our cooking kit is our pressure cooker. We store our bowls, utensils, cups, and anything that is loose inside the pressure cooker. Pressure cookers are awesome for car camping because things like beans and rice can be cooked extremely fast. My wife adds a gourmet Kitchen wok for all stir fry delicacies.

Food

You don't need special camping food. We tend to eat about the same way that we eat at home. We buy lots of fresh fruits and veggies at local markets. We bring a various assortment of whole grain pastas, dried beans, brown rice, and our famous super porridge breakfast grains. My wife calls this our pantry. We have sea salt, whole pepper corns, soy sauce, hot sauce, and lots of our favorite things that we may not be able to buy on the road.

Cooler For Perishables

My wife found this great Coleman 70 quart cooler that keeps food cold for up to 4 days (honest!). We buy fresh chicken, fish, beef, fruits, and vegetables on the road and store them in the cooler with a block of ice or dried ice.

When you have the right equipment, your family camping trips will be so much more enjoyable!

However, even if you have the greatest equipment available, your trip will not be fun if you don't plan on doing things that your family enjoys. The trip is not a race! Take your time and slow down.

We have 2 young boys. We bring bug catchers for them to play with. My wife packs lots of small toys and books for them. They watch DVD's when we are traveling for extended periods of time. We do all the junior ranger program for our boys. They love them! I take them for moon walks at night. Even if there is not a full moon, the boys want the adventure of walking at night with flashlights.

We like to stay at each campground for at least 2 days. It makes the experience fantastic when you are not setting up camp every day. We bring some light weight lounge chairs for my wife and me. Just kicking back, drinking coffee, and reading books is good enough entertainment for us.

Camping for our family is a time bonding and resting from the normal day to day routines at home. This summer we will be going on a 3 week family camping trip to northern California and the Oregon coast.

Campgrounds:

We tend to favor the primitive National Forest, National Park, and State Park campgrounds. They offer great value for the money. Some even have showers!

When you're getting ready to go camping, there's always the question of what gear to bring. Having too much stuff is no fun - especially if you're hiking in to your campsite - but you don't want to be without something essential either. A lot of what you'll need will vary depending on several factors - the length of your trip, the weather, where you'll be camping, etc - but let's take a look at what you can expect to need on most camping trips.

There are several things you'll need on any camping trip that you go on. Always bring the following:

Tent (or a tent equivalent, such as a heavy duty hammock, or the materials for a lean-to if you're roughing it)
Sleeping bag
First aid kit
Flashlight
Matches
Knife
Hatchet and/or machete (for cutting up firewood)
Food and water

For cold weather camping, you'll want to bring at least one of each of the following. There's no need to run out and buy new things. You'll be out in the woods and everything is going to get dirty anyway, so the old, beat up sweatshirt and jacket will do fine.

Sweatshirt (with a hood if you have one)
Jacket
Cap
Gloves
Sleeping bag liner (if needed, depending on the weather rating of your bag)

If the weather is going to be very hot, plan on bringing these items:
